European Audiovisual Observatory: 28% of Female Professionals Get to Work in European TV/SVoD Production

According to a recently published report by the EAO (European Audiovisual Observatory), the percentage of women working in the European TV and SVoD (Subscription Video on Demand) industry is 28%. The report analyzed the gender inequality of off-screen personnel in six categories: directors, writers, producers, cinematographers, composers and editors, while the lead roles statistics is also taken into account.

EAO provides a comparative European overview of the audiovisual industry in 40 different countries, and this concrete report was produced by the Department for Market Information that produces statistical and economic analysis of the trends in the European cinema, television, video and internet sectors.

Key findings in the report include that, in 2022, the share of women professionals in the production of TV and SVOD fiction was 28%, where one of the cumulative factors for this result is fewer assignments for female professionals.

The percentage of female producers who get jobs is the highest at 48%, followed by screenwriters with 37%, editors with 26%, directors with 25%, composers with 11% and cinematographers with 8%.

When cumulating directors, writers, producers, cinematographers, composers and editors, the share of audiovisual fiction episodes (or TV films) signed by female-driven* professionals’ teams grew from 9% in 2015 to 17% in 2022.

From the report, we can conclude that the most significant progress has been achieved in the context of positions with a low or very low share of women (composers, videographers, directors). Progress is slower for positions such as screenwriters or producers.
