Appeal to the Media to Register Data in Accordance with the Law

Data from the Media Register, which are on the website of the Serbian Business Registers Agency (SBRA), show that, out of a total of 2,588 registered media in Serbia, less than a fifth do not have all the data prescribed by the Law on Public Information and Media entered. Failure to update data in accordance with the prescribed deadline may result in the media being deleted from the Registry.

The Media Register began operating in 2015 as a centralized, electronic database on media, in accordance with the provisions of Article 141 of the Law on Public Information and Media. At the moment, according to SBRA data, about a fifth of the media have not registered all the data prescribed by the new Law. Namely, the list available on the SBRA website shows 482 media that do not have all their data registered, while 2,588 media are properly registered.

Deadlines and procedures for publishers

According to the SBRA, “all media publishers, who have not yet registered information about the editor-in-chief and should have done so according to the provisions of the old law, are obliged to submit an application and register information about the editor-in-chief within the next month and a half, i.e. until the expiration of the term prescribed by the new law. Media publishers who changed the editor-in-chief, but did not register this change within 15 days of the change, also have this obligation. They should submit a registration application with appropriate documentation, in order to update the data on the editor-in-chief, which is a mandatory subject of registration, in the register.

If the media publisher is a capital company, then the publisher has a legal obligation to register the document prescribed by Article 47, paragraph 1 of the Law on Public Information and Media, which contains data on legal entities and natural persons that directly or indirectly have more than 5% share in the founding capital publishers, data on their related parties, in the sense of the law regulating the legal position of business companies and data on other publishers in which these parties have more than 5% share in the founding capital.”

SBRA INVITES MEDIA PUBLISHERS TO FULFILL THEIR LEGAL OBLIGATION AND REGISTER ALL NECESSARY DATA BY FEBRUARY 4, 2024.
